News from the ICRC Women's Club
The Irish Canadian Rugby Club Women’s Program would like to make several announcements as the club looks ahead to the 2010 season.
The 2010 Club Executive was elected into their positions at the AGM held this past weekend and are listed below:
President – Lesley Lemieux
Treasurer – Lynsie Mclaughlin
Player Retention and Development – Lauren Williams
Junior Development – Jessica Panzer
Fundraising – Shannon Smyth
Communications - Heather Smyth
Long time ICRC club member Ryan Carr has agreed to take on the position of Assistant Coach and will be responsible for coaching the set pieces and forward play. Ryan was considered one of the foremost scrummagers in the club during his playing days. A former junior provincial player for Nova Scotia, Carr brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to the Irish Women and will be a huge asset as the ICRC looks to capture championship titles in 2010. “I coached Ryan when he played and he was always someone that could be counted on to battle it out in the trenches and never back down. His technical knowledge of the scrum and lineouts combined with his tireless work ethic is exactly what we need next season.” commented Women’s Head Coach Rodin Lozada.
The Irish Women would also like to express their gratitude and thanks to Kirsten Sample who has served as 1st XV Captain for the last three seasons. Kirsten has announced her retirement in order to concentrate on her career as an Occupational Therapist and we all wish her well in her future endeavours. Under Sample’s leadership the Irish captured their first ever OWL league title in 2008 and led them to two consecutive Cup Final appearances in ’08 and ’09. The Irish Women experienced unprecedented success under Sample’s guidance as Captain and she has set some high standards for future captains to live up to.
For the 2010 season, the Irish Women are proud to announce that the position of 1st XV Captain will be filled by the club’s leading scorer in 2009 and long time club member Karen Dillane. Dillane is arguably one of the most dangerous finishers in the province as her eye for gaps and blazing speed makes her one of the most dangerous players on the field. She is uniquely positioned to assume the senior leadership role in the club as she has been a member of the ICRC Women since its inception in 2004 and has come through club’s development program. Dillane is a former Ontario Junior player who has contributed greatly to the club’s success over the years as she scored the winning try in the 2006 OWL Cup Final and was a first choice winger during the 2008 OWL championship season. “KD is a player that teammates look to when they need something special to happen.” explained Head Coach Lozada as to why Dillane was the perfect fit for the role of Captain. “She comes across as being unassuming, but when you watch her play she has a ruthlessness and competitiveness that makes her a winner and a natural leader.” Dillane will undoubtedly carry on the proud tradition of outstanding Irish Captains and will continue leading the club to success on the pitch.
